Alaska's Senate race remains too early to call, with Republican Senator Dan Sullivan leading Democrat Mary Peltola 100,751 votes to 99,074 on first choices, at about 72 percent of the vote reported. Neither candidate is above 50 percent, and under Alaska's system the race is not finished: ballots postmarked by Election Day are accepted for up to 15 days, until November 18, and a ranked-choice tabulation follows once the count is complete. The Anchorage Daily News describes the two as neck-and-neck, with thousands of ballots yet to be counted.
In New York, U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni has barred the Trump administration — until at least Saturday, November 7 — from deporting detained Afghans to Afghanistan or Pakistan, in a temporary restraining order issued on November 3. Advocates fear a flight to Pakistan could lead to a handover to the Taliban. More than 150 Afghans are in ICE custody in Louisiana, ICE told the court it has no deportation flights planned through this week, and the administration's response is due Thursday, November 5, at 9 a.m.
And in Tehran, Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf read the midterm results as a verdict on the war, posting on X: “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message. If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare.”
For Americans, the three stories are one picture of where the country stands the morning after. A Senate seat that could still move the balance in Washington will not be settled for days, and every lawful ballot postmarked in time will count toward it. A judge, not the election, is what stands between 150 detained Afghans and a flight out of the country this week. And America's enemies are already reading the voters' verdict as a restraint on the president's war — the answer they get will be written by what Washington does next.
