The Associated Press has declared that Democrats have won control of the United States Senate, ending Republican control of the chamber for the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. The AP made the declaration after calling Iowa's open Senate race for Democrat Josh Turek at 11:35 p.m. Eastern — the sixth Republican-held seat Democrats flipped on Election Night, giving them at least a 51-49 majority from the 53-47 Republican majority they faced going in.
The six flips came in North Carolina, where Roy Cooper won, South Carolina, where Annie Andrews won, Ohio, where Sherrod Brown won, Texas, where James Talarico won, Kansas, where Adam Hamilton won, and Iowa, where Turek defeated Republican Representative Ashley Hinson. NBC News, CBS News and ABC News had projected Democratic control around midnight, putting Democrats at the 51 seats needed for the majority. Democrats last held the Senate in 2023 to 2025, and Chuck Schumer is in line to return as majority leader.
President Trump, whose own case all night was that he was not on the ballot and could not carry candidates who ran without him, told the AP after the Senate was lost that the Democrats "did a good job" and blamed the Republican candidates for the defeats. The loss means the President's final two years will face a Senate that can block his nominees and his bills — with the networks also projecting Democrats to take the House, though the AP has not yet called the House.
For American families, a Democratic Senate changes what can become law between now and 2028: tax bills, judges and cabinet confirmations, border and energy measures and any new relief on household costs will all need Democratic votes, and the fights over them will run through a chamber the President's party no longer controls.
