The champ is back — in his own words. Canelo Alvarez regained the WBC super-middleweight championship in Riyadh on Saturday night, beating the previously unbeaten Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision in his first fight since losing the undisputed title to Terence Crawford in September 2025 and undergoing elbow surgery.
The judges scored it 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110, all for Alvarez. Mbilli's night got harder in the eighth round, when he was docked a point for a punch to the back of the head. The loss is the first of his career — he falls to 29-1-1 — while Alvarez improves to 64-3-2 and takes the green WBC belt back.
What makes the win count is the road back: a lost crown, an elbow operation, and thirteen months out of the ring would have ended most fighters' runs at the top. Alvarez answered the only way that settles it — twelve rounds against an unbeaten man, won on every card.
For fight fans, it is the comeback story the sport runs on: hard work after a defeat and an injury, rewarded with a world title. The super-middleweight division has its king back, and every contender at 168 pounds now has to go through Riyadh's winner to take the belt.
