Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis says someone used her identity to file a fraudulent voter registration in New York City, listing her as a Republican living at Trump Tower in Manhattan.
Willis told WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta that she learned of the filing when she received a notice from the New York City Board of Elections that the registration was being cancelled because officials suspected it was fraudulent. "It came to my attention that someone registered to vote as me in New York. Interestingly enough, they registered me as a Republican that lived in Trump Tower, of all places," she told the station's investigative reporter Mark Winne.
According to Willis, the application listed Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue as her residence and the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta as her mailing address, and contained a false date of birth, the wrong party affiliation and a forged signature. No ballot was cast under the registration, and New York election officials cancelled it. Willis said her office is now talking to a New York prosecutor about pursuing criminal charges.
Willis is the Georgia prosecutor who indicted President Donald Trump and 18 allies in August 2023, accusing them of a racketeering conspiracy to overturn Trump's narrow loss to Joe Biden in Georgia in the 2020 presidential election. She was later disqualified from the case by the Georgia Court of Appeals over her romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor she had hired to lead it, and the case has since stalled.
The episode has drawn attention because of the contrast at its centre: the district attorney who brought the Georgia election case now says she herself was the target of a fraudulent registration. The SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed bill in Congress, would require documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, a measure its supporters say would make schemes of this kind harder to carry out.
