Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say they have moved their missile and drone production lines underground, into what they call “missile production cities” built deep beneath the ground so that manufacturing can continue even under heavy bombardment.
Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, the spokesman for the IRGC’s Aerospace Force, made the announcement at a press conference in Tehran on Saturday marking IRGC Aerospace Force Week. He said the force had “rapidly transferred” production from surface sites to underground facilities — going beyond the underground “missile cities” Iran has long used to store missiles, to actually building them underground as well. The point, he said, is that production no longer stops when the bombing starts, and that an enemy watching launches can no longer reliably judge how many missiles Iran has left. He said a new underground missile city will be unveiled this week, along with other achievements of the Aerospace Force.
At the same press conference, Mohebbi also said the restrictions Iran had placed on the range of its missiles have been lifted. The claims are the Guards’ own: the underground production sites have not been independently verified, and nothing shown so far demonstrates what is actually being built beneath the ground.
The announcement is aimed squarely at the United States. American forces are enforcing a naval blockade of Iran, disabling ships that try to run it, and the President confirmed U.S. strikes inside Iran overnight. Iran’s answer is that its weapons industry is being put where American bombs cannot reach it. For Americans, that means the campaign to wear down Iran’s missile stockpile faces a harder problem: if the Guards’ claim is true, every missile fired can be replaced from a factory underground, and the confrontation in the Gulf — with U.S. forces and U.S.-bound shipping inside the range of those missiles — cannot be ended from the air alone.
