President Trump settled the question on Saturday night. Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago Halloween party in Palm Beach, Florida, he was asked whether he would invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the December G20 leaders' summit in Florida. "I would — yeah, I would. No problem," he answered.
The leaders' summit takes place at Doral, Florida, on December 14–15, with Trump hosting as G20 president. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has already been invited, which means the two leaders Trump is pressing toward a negotiated settlement could both be under the same roof, on American soil, before Christmas. The arrangements and purpose of any Ukrainian participation have not yet been set out.
Hours earlier in Atlanta, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had left the decision open at the closing press conference of the G20 foreign ministers' meeting. "That would be up to the President to decide. I wouldn't rule it out," Rubio said. "But I don't have an announcement on that today." He suggested Ukrainian participation could be considered if it offered a prospect of progress toward ending the war.
Rubio used the Atlanta meeting to press Washington's case for a negotiated end to the Russia-Ukraine war, saying the United States stays engaged because it talks to both sides, and that other countries are encouraging it to continue. The ministers took up the war's spillover — attacks on Ukraine's energy network, shipping and food security — along with proposals from Türkiye and India to protect grain and energy shipments through the Black Sea.
For American households, the stake in that room is direct: the Atlanta agenda itself — energy supplies, shipping lanes and food security — is the list of ways this war reaches American prices. Bringing Zelensky to Florida under Trump's chairmanship is the administration's next lever for the settlement it says it wants, and it runs the diplomacy at home, in front of the world's biggest economies.
