Nine months after her mother vanished from her home outside Tucson, Savannah Guthrie has gone to the public again. On Sunday, the Today co-anchor shared an old drawing made by her young daughter Vale — a blue umbrella in the rain, with the words "I know it might not seem like it but I really need my mommy" — and a new plea for the one thing her family still does not have: an answer about Nancy Guthrie.
"Found this old drawing from my daughter today," Guthrie wrote. "It says so much about how I feel. The world goes on, things appear 'normal' — as we try to keep going and be strong, especially for our young kids." Then the appeal, made for the whole family — "for Annie and Tommy, for Cam and Kristine, for Mike and me and for all of mom's beloved grandchildren: we ache for her, we cry out for answers, we cannot move forward. We need someone to help us, tell us what you know. Our mom was a light in this world. We want to celebrate her and give her the dignity she deserves. The reward is still available. Please. We are begging you. Please help us."
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on the night of January 31, when relatives dropped her off at her home in the Catalina Foothills outside Tucson, shortly before 10 p.m. She was reported missing the next day, February 1, after she failed to attend a virtual church service. Authorities have said they believe she was abducted: a masked, armed individual was caught on the home's doorbell camera. The Pima County Sheriff's Department, working with the FBI, has treated the home as a crime scene from the start. In the first week, two ransom notes reached the family and a Tucson television station — the first demanding $4 million in bitcoin and saying she was alive; the second claiming she had died shortly after she was taken. Neither has been verified. No suspect has been identified and no one has been arrested.
The investigation is still moving. On October 30, the sheriff's department said the Nancy Guthrie Task Force is continuing to work with laboratories to advance DNA analysis, and investigators recently travelled to Florida to meet with lab scientists about what more can be done. The money on the table has not moved anyone yet: the FBI is offering up to $100,000 for information leading to Nancy Guthrie's recovery, and the family added a reward of up to $1 million of its own in February — the reward Guthrie's Sunday post confirmed is still available. Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County 88-CRIME line at 520-882-7463. Her condition and whereabouts remain unknown.
