Selma Blair has broken her silence with an emotional video apology after her arrest on assault charges over an incident aboard a Delta flight — her first words on it since October 11. "I know I've been quiet for a couple weeks since October 11. And you deserve to hear from me directly, and I'm sorry that it's taken this long," she said.
In the video, posted on Instagram, the 54-year-old actress said: "Not one day ever have I intended to hurt or frighten anyone a day in my life. And so to the people that I disappointed, that I hurt, that I frightened, alarmed, I am so sorry." She said a legal matter is going on and her lawyers have asked her not to say anything about that day: "I'm listening to them. And I take this very seriously."
Blair was arrested at New York's JFK Airport on October 11 after Delta flight 938 from Los Angeles landed, following reports that she had been physically abusive aboard the flight. She is accused of biting a flight attendant and of kicking a police officer and a nurse afterwards. She has pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree assault, was released on $20,000 bail, and is due back in court on January 19. Her spokesperson has said she suffered a medical emergency on the flight and that there was no attempt to open the aircraft door, and her attorney told the court she had missed several doses of a drug that controls her neurological symptoms.
Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, said she will now be taking care of her health and her son, Arthur, and thanked the people who have reached out to her. Her service dog, Scout, who was with her on the flight, is also okay, she said.
For everyone who flies, the case shows how seriously trouble aboard a plane is treated, whoever the passenger is: an arrest at the gate, assault charges, bail and a court date — and it will now be decided in court, where her medical-emergency account will be tested against the allegations.
