On Tuesday, November 3, every candidate New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani backed for Congress won. Former city comptroller Brad Lander took the 10th District, state Assemblymember Claire Valdez took the 7th, and Darializa Avila Chevalier took the 13th. All three are democratic socialists. All three first beat established Democrats in the June primaries — Lander beat a sitting congressman, Avila Chevalier displaced the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — and then coasted through the general election. Mamdani's own verdict on the night, in a short video posted just after midnight, was: "It's morning again in America."
New York was not the whole story. Five democratic socialists are entering Congress for the first time, and eight candidates who are members of the Democratic Socialists of America or backed by the group won House races across the country — among them Melat Kiros in Denver, Donavan McKinney in Michigan and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania. In New York City alone, voters elected nine new socialists to office, from Congress down to the state legislature. They ran on rent freezes, universal childcare, higher wages and bigger public services; Valdez ran on universal rent control and Medicare for All.
All of this is happening inside Donald Trump's economy — the economy that added 165,000 jobs in October, smashed the 65,000 forecast, cut unemployment to 4.1% and lifted average pay to $38.00 an hour. The socialists are thriving in it: organising in it, campaigning in it, winning in it. Yet they are portrayed as the ones who should hold all the power and win everything, as if the country working people are actually living in counts for nothing.
What happened this Nov 3 will reshape so much. The socialists are moving into America, and nothing will stop it. It will be difficult to stop, because people don't know; they believe what they are told.
