President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday that Stephen Miller, his deputy chief of staff and one of his most trusted advisers, will become White House Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9. Susie Wiles, who has held the job since the start of Trump's term, is moving over to the Trump Political Operation. It is the first major personnel shake-up since Democrats swept Tuesday's midterm elections. “I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026,” Trump wrote. “Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job!”
Wiles confirmed the change herself on Friday: “Today is my last day as White House Chief of Staff.” She was the first woman ever to hold the job and is the longest-serving chief of staff of Trump's presidency — he cycled through four chiefs of staff in his first term. She is not being pushed out of Trump's world: she moves to run his political operation, the machine that will fight the battles of the next two years.
Miller has been one of Trump's closest enforcers since the beginning of his first term and is the architect of the administration's hard-line immigration and mass-deportation agenda. As deputy chief of staff he already ran much of the West Wing's policy machine; from Monday he holds the top aide's job itself — the post that controls who sees the president, what reaches his desk, and how his agenda gets executed.
For ordinary Americans, the change matters because of what it signals. Days after voters handed Congress to the Democrats, Trump is not softening — he is putting the most hard-line loyalist in his inner circle in charge of the White House, while the steady hand who ran his winning campaign moves to run the political fight outside it. The agenda working families voted on — deportations, border enforcement and America-first policy — now runs through Stephen Miller's office.
