CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Ohio Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy took the stage alongside President Donald Trump at a midterm rally at the Shoemaker Center at Ohio University Chillicothe on Wednesday evening, October 28, 2026, six days before the November 3 midterm elections, and used the moment to set out the two promises at the center of his campaign for governor.
Ramaswamy pledged to pursue what he described as the largest property-tax relief package in Ohio history if elected governor, and promised to end sanctuary-city policies in Ohio, arguing the state should take a tougher approach to illegal immigration. He said he would act by executive order on his first day in office on sanctuary cities. He gave no figures, financing plan or legislative timetable for the property-tax proposal in the remarks.
"President Trump puts Americans first," Ramaswamy told the crowd. "I'm going to put Ohioans first." He said he intends to work closely with the Trump administration on his agenda.
Trump predicted a Republican victory and repeatedly appealed for voters to support Ramaswamy and the party's congressional candidates, telling the crowd: "Six days from now, the people of Ohio are going to elect Vivek Ramaswamy as your governor." Trump also reiterated his conditional pledge of a $5,000 payment to all adult U.S. citizens if Republicans win the House and Senate, describing it as a dividend costing approximately $1 trillion; that pledge has not been legislated and no payment schedule or detailed funding mechanism was outlined at the event.
Ramaswamy's Democratic opponent is former state health director Amy Acton. The two offer sharply different visions on taxes, immigration, government policy and the role of the state, and Ohio voters will decide the direction on November 3.
The rally was Trump's third Ohio campaign stop this month, and he also used it to back Republican Senator Jon Husted, who faces former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown in the special Senate election.
