Three days before the midterm vote, the man who becomes Speaker if his party wins the House made his confidence plain in Virginia Beach. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, in the city Saturday to rally voters for Democratic nominee Elaine Luria, told CBS News he is "very confident that House Democrats are on the verge of taking back control because the American people are fed up with MAGA extremism." Asked what he would count as a good night on Tuesday, his answer was one word short of a prediction: "the majority."
The rally, at the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center, closed the final day of early in-person voting in Virginia. Luria is running to take back Virginia's 2nd Congressional District in a rematch with the Republican incumbent, Rep. Jen Kiggans — one of the battleground seats that will decide the House. Congressman Bobby Scott and Virginia House Speaker Don Scott rallied with them.
Jeffries was also asked whether President Trump would accept the results if Democrats win back one or both chambers. Mr. Trump, he said, "will have no choice but to accept the results, because I believe that the American people are on the verge of delivering a decisive verdict." No Republican response to the remarks has been reported. The other party's leader is making the same trip for the same seat: House Speaker Mike Johnson is due in Virginia Beach on Monday to campaign for Kiggans.
For voters, what Jeffries is betting on is concrete: the party that holds the House holds the gavel, the committee subpoenas, and the pen on the bills that set taxes, spending and the rules both parties campaign on. A flipped House would stall the rest of President Trump's program; a held House would carry it forward. But a bet made three days before the vote is settled by the vote itself — and on that, Tuesday has the only say.
