Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is firing back hard at Sen. Elizabeth Warren after she flooded him with more than 100 critical letters on the economy.
Bessent sent Warren a letter on Saturday that ended with a handwritten jab: "Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day in advance to you and your family" — a direct shot at her long-debunked claim of Native American heritage.
Then on Sunday morning, the Treasury secretary took the fight to Fox & Friends, calling Warren "economically illiterate" and dismissing her barrage of letters as a politically motivated "letter-writing crusade."
The feud has been building for months. Warren, the ranking Democrat with a long history of clashing with Wall Street and Trump's economic team, has hammered Bessent with letter after letter attacking the administration's handling of the economy.
Bessent isn't playing defense. Mocking her old claim that "high cheekbones" made her Native American, he's turning her own history into the punchline — a reference to the heritage controversy that has dogged Warren since her 2012 Senate run, when she listed herself as a minority in professional directories before a DNA test showed only trace Native ancestry generations back.
On the substance, Bessent argues the economy under Trump's second term is delivering — and that Warren's letters are theater, not oversight. Warren's camp counters that the administration's tariffs and spending are hurting working families, and that oversight letters are exactly what a senator is supposed to send.
One hundred letters in, neither side is blinking. The question is whether voters see a Treasury secretary dodging accountability — or a senator running a paper crusade.
With the midterms weeks away and the economy still the top issue on voters' minds, the Bessent-Warren war of words is only getting louder.
