Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon said on CNN that she wants her Republican opponent, Sen. Ashley Moody, "locked up and punished in jail."
Nixon made the remark Wednesday on CNN's "The Arena" while pushing back on attack ads that say she wants to abolish prisons and defund the police. "Why would I want to do that when I want her locked up and punished in jail for what she has done?" she said.
Host Kasie Hunt pressed her: "You want your Republican opponent locked up?" Nixon answered, "Yeah, basically, yes. Because of what she did. Yes. I absolutely would want that to happen."
Nixon accused Moody of taking "$10 million from sick kids." The money came from a Medicaid settlement that Moody's office approved as attorney general, and it went to the Hope Florida Foundation founded by Casey DeSantis before reaching political committees. Moody has not been charged with any crime.
When Hunt asked whether she had enough evidence to justify jail, Nixon said she would call for an investigation as a senator. Sen. Chris Murphy, who appeared alongside her, did not weigh in.
Nixon is a state representative and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. One clip of the exchange has been viewed more than a million times on X. Moody was appointed to the Senate in January 2025 and is seeking a full term on Nov. 3.
