A federal grand jury in Louisville has indicted a 59-year-old Canadian woman living in the city for voting illegally in the November 2024 presidential election โ knowing full well she was not an American citizen.
Sandra Madeline Watson was charged with illegal voting by an alien in a federal election, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Kentucky announced. According to the indictment, returned October 7, Watson cast her ballot on or about November 5, 2024, in Jefferson County in an election for President, Vice President, Senate, and the House โ all while knowing she had no legal right to vote.
The case was built by Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Raymond McGee is prosecuting it. Watson has already made her initial appearance before a federal magistrate judge. If convicted, she faces up to a year in federal prison.
Watson's indictment is the latest in a sweeping Trump-administration crackdown on noncitizen voting. The Justice Department says it has brought more than 90 voter-fraud cases in the president's second term โ 50 of them in just the last five weeks โ including charges against 16 noncitizens across multiple states and 10 foreign nationals indicted in Minnesota for voting illegally and lying about their citizenship to register.
"American elections are for Americans," one DOJ official put it, after the department warned bluntly: "If you are not allowed to vote in our elections, you shouldn't. And if you do, that's a CRIME."
For years, critics dismissed noncitizen voting as a myth. The administration says the indictments piling up across the country tell a different story. Watson, like every defendant, is presumed innocent until proven guilty โ but the charge sheet says she knew exactly what she was doing when she walked into that voting booth.
