Faduma Mohamed, the Mayor of the London Borough of Ealing, is dancing in full mayoral regalia — a bright red robe with fur trim, a white jabot, a gold mayoral chain, and a black tricorn hat worn over her hijab — at the center of a packed, cheering hall. Around her, dozens of constituents, mostly women in colorful traditional dress and headscarves, clap, cheer, and film the moment on their phones as upbeat music plays.
The footage has traveled fast online, and it is a striking snapshot of where London is right now.
Mohamed is real, and so is the office. She was elected Mayor of Ealing on May 26, 2026, making history as the borough's first British Somali woman in a hijab to hold the ceremonial civic role. The Labour councillor has represented Southall West ward since 2022, after serving a year as Deputy Mayor.
Her story is the story of modern Ealing. Born in Somalia, she moved to Britain at age 11 after fleeing conflict, arriving without English and settling in Southall. She has spoken about the teachers who helped her find her footing, and after taking office she pledged to champion unity and inclusion across one of London's most diverse boroughs — "I want to make everyone proud and be an example to many communities, especially girls and women who look like me. Representation matters."
During her mayoral year she is supporting two local charities — Hope for Southall Street Homeless and Stepping Stones Together UK — and her father, Ahmed Mohamed, joins her at civic engagements.
To her supporters, the dancing video is joy: a mayor celebrating with the community that raised her. To her critics, it is something else entirely — a symbol of a London transformed. Both sides are looking at the same footage and seeing the argument of the moment.
What nobody disputes is the fact of it. This is Ealing in 2026: a hijab-wearing, Somali-born mayor, in centuries-old ceremonial robes, dancing with her constituents. Love it or lament it, this is where London is.
