Billionaire Elon Musk has fired back at Democrats who are preparing to investigate him and his companies if they win control of Congress in the November midterm elections, warning that anyone who comes after him will face retaliation in return.
In a post on X on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Musk wrote: “Live by the sword, die by the sword. Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets …” The post was a reply to a Politico report on the Democrats’ plans, headlined “Capitol agenda: Dem gavels are coming for Elon Musk.”
Politico reported on October 20 that House Democrats are drawing up plans to use congressional oversight powers against Musk if they take the House or the Senate on November 3. According to the report, the planned inquiries would examine Musk’s leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the government cost-cutting initiative he led earlier in President Donald Trump’s second term — including the dismantling of agencies Congress had authorized and funded — as well as claims that he restricted satellite service for Ukraine, and questions about conflicts of interest involving the multibillion-dollar federal contracts and subsidies held by his companies SpaceX and Tesla.
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have spoken openly about the plans. Representative Greg Casar of Texas told Politico that committees should be conducting oversight “into the corporations and ultra-rich people who have tried to corrupt our government,” adding that “of course, Elon Musk is on that list.” Sara Guerrero, a spokesperson for Representative Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, told Politico: “We definitely have a lot of questions about Elon Musk’s role in DOGE, and it is something we plan to investigate.”
Musk spent Wednesday responding to the report and to commentary about it. He also circulated a clip of technology journalist Kara Swisher speaking on The Bulwark podcast, in which she said that if Trump loses the House and the Senate, she would worry if she were Musk, because agencies DOGE had cut back had been investigating his companies. Musk replied to the clip with the words “Message received.”
President Trump defended Musk on Friday, October 23, when asked by Fox Business White House correspondent Edward Lawrence whether he was worried Democrats could go after the billionaire. “Elon’s a brilliant guy and I have an expression: we have to protect our brilliant people because we don’t have too many of them,” Trump said. “Elon has done nothing wrong. Elon is a very good guy.”
Musk is a major donor to Republican candidates and political organizations ahead of the midterms, and his companies hold extensive business with the federal government — the combination that has made him a central target in the Democrats’ planned oversight. For now, however, the investigations remain plans, not proceedings: whether Democrats can pursue them depends on the outcome of the November 3 elections.
