President Trump just announced in Wasilla that every single federal permit needed for the $54 billion, 800-mile Alaska LNG pipeline has been approved — ending years of the project sitting stuck in a permitting process that can take up to 25 years. He told the crowd at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center that the jobs will be unbelievable and energy costs will come down, and he told the people behind the project they can start construction tonight. Trump said the project will create over 13,000 jobs and save the typical Alaska household more than $2,000 a year on energy bills.
“Every single permit that you need has been granted.”
The pipeline would carry natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope 800 miles south to Nikiski, where it would be liquefied and shipped to buyers in Asia. Trump said Taiwan has agreed to buy 30 percent of the gas for the next 20 years and invest $4.4 billion — a commitment Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick repeated from the stage — on top of $50 billion Trump said South Korea has committed as part of its trade and investment deal with him. South Korean officials say their participation is still under review and depends on the project proving commercially viable.
Trump also warned that if a Democrat gets in, all of these permits and the project itself will be terminated, just like what happened before. Alaskans have chased a North Slope gas line for roughly four decades, through plans that repeatedly stalled on permits, politics or money. The permits remove the obstacle that has blocked the project for so long, though developer Glenfarne still needs binding purchase contracts and a final investment decision before construction crews actually roll — which is exactly why locking in buyers like Taiwan matters.
