Hillary Clinton has told Democrats to "buckle up," laying out what she says comes if her party takes Congress in Tuesday's midterms: a Democratic Congress that would investigate President Trump, his administration, his family — and his supporters. "So buckle up," she said. "The election is just the beginning."
Clinton made the remarks on High Stakes, the midterm podcast she co-hosts with journalist Kara Swisher, released Wednesday — six days before the November 3 elections. Asked what happens if Trump and the Republicans "lose big," she said a Democratic Congress would "rein him in, hold him accountable, investigate him, his administration, his family, his, you know, supporters and allies." She called Trump "a lame duck" who "literally has held Republicans hostage for a decade," adding: "One day, the hostages look around and say there are more of us than there is of him." She named no specific supporters, offenses or committees — the promise was the investigations themselves.
The clip has spread fastest through conservative accounts, where one word is doing the work: "supporters." Townhall framed the remarks as a promise of "massive lawfare"; legal commentator Jonathan Turley aimed his "berserkers" line at the wider Democratic chorus Clinton was joining, and Fox's Gutfeld! aired the clip on Thursday. No formal response from the White House or from Trump himself had been reported as of Friday.
Clinton's own framing is accountability: a Congress with subpoena power checking a president she says Republicans have been afraid to cross. Her critics' framing is reprisal — that after two years of Democrats calling Republican inquiries weaponization, a former secretary of state is campaigning, in plain words, on investigating not just a president but the citizens who voted for him.
For voters, that is the concrete stake she has put on Tuesday: control of Congress now comes with an announced program. Win, and the investigations begin — of the administration, the family, and, by her own list, the supporters and allies. Whether that promise mobilizes her side or Trump's is one of the things the midterms will answer.
