Vice President JD Vance praised Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers' performance in his NBC interview at a campaign rally in Howell, Michigan, on Tuesday, telling supporters Rogers had shown he could stay calm under tough questioning — and using the moment to take a swipe at NBC and its "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker.
In a clip of the Howell remarks circulated by C-SPAN, Vance said of Rogers's interview: "He didn't get angry. He sat there and calmly and carefully explained why Abdul El-Sayed is a crazy person that should never be in the seat of power." Vance argued that composure under questioning showed Rogers was fit for the Senate.
The interview Vance was praising aired Sunday, Oct. 25, on NBC's "Meet the Press," where Welker pressed Rogers on his 2012 remarks about the Muslim Brotherhood and on whether he considers himself a MAGA Republican — a question Rogers dodged, at one point citing difficulty with his earpiece — while Rogers in turn accused Welker of not pressing his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, hard enough.
The Howell rally, at CHI Aviation one week before the Nov. 3 election, was a final-week push for Rogers in one of the country's closest Senate races, with Vance also campaigning for Republican House candidates including Rep. Tom Barrett; Rogers faces El-Sayed for the open Michigan Senate seat.
