Libya's foreign ministry has summoned the U.S. chargé d'affaires to protest President Donald Trump's remarks about Libya at his rally in Perry, Georgia, and Trump has answered on Truth Social — praising Libyans as a proud people while insisting that Libya cannot remain a corridor for illegal migration.
At the Perry rally, Trump called Libya "terror-infested" and recalled his "shithouse countries" phrase, remarks made in the context of his long-running argument: that failed and unstable states have become launch points for terrorism and for the illegal migration now flooding the West, and that the countries involved must take responsibility for stopping it.
Libya's foreign ministry summoned the American envoy on Sunday to reject statements it said "undermine the dignity of its people." Both Libyan administrations, east and west, denounced the remarks and rejected being drawn into U.S. "electoral debates."
Trump responded on Truth Social on Sunday night. Libyans, he wrote, are "proud, resilient, hospitable, and deserving of peace and prosperity." He affirmed America's commitment to its ties with Libya and praised the sacrifices Libyans made fighting ISIS. And he held his line: Libya "cannot remain a corridor for illegal migration, and this must end now."
The corridor Trump named runs from Libya's coast across the Mediterranean into Europe, and his administration has pressed transit countries to shut the route down. His answer to Tripoli keeps the relationship open and honours Libya's fight against ISIS, while making clear the migration route through Libya is not negotiable.
