Mayor Zohran Mamdani is not running the city. He is running a feed.
He just doubled New York's artist grants from $5,000 to $10,000, the first raise in nearly 20 years, and put it out like a product launch. Painters, dancers, writers, filmmakers, and, in his own video, rappers can now apply for up to $10,000 in taxpayer money. The pot is about $3.5 million through the borough arts councils. Brooklyn's deadline is Oct. 11, the Bronx Oct. 30, Manhattan Nov. 12, Queens Nov. 17. Staten Island opens in November. Grantees also get a free monthly shopping day for art supplies.
That is the whole announcement. Not crime. Not rent. Not the trains. A grant you can clip, a line you can quote, "or a rapper," and a headline that travels. It sits on a Department of Cultural Affairs budget of $323.8 million, the biggest in city history, and he sold it as help for working New Yorkers.
This is what he is serious about. Stories that sell on social media. The city is the content.
