A man was shot and killed on the northbound E train platform at the Seventh Avenue–53rd Street subway station in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon after an argument, and the gunman is still on the loose, police said.
The NYPD said that at about 12:21 p.m. a man “approached an unidentified male on the northbound E train platform … displayed a firearm and discharged it, striking the victim once in the chest.” The gunman then fled north on Seventh Avenue on foot. The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m. Police said he was possibly in his 30s and have not released his name.
At a news conference, police said the dispute between two men moved from the platform onto a train that had pulled in, then back onto the platform. It is still unclear whether the shots were fired on the platform or the train. Police said the shooting was not random. What the men were arguing about has not been made public.
Police released photos of the suspect, who was last seen wearing a red tracksuit, a black vest and a black face mask and carrying a backpack. No arrests have been made.
“It is fortunate nobody outside the fight was hurt,” MTA Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper said, adding that the gunman “should face maximum consequences from the justice system.”
Uptown E trains were rerouted onto the F line and uptown D trains skipped the station while police investigated, according to MTA alerts. As of Oct. 11, four people had been shot in the transit system this year, up from two at that point in 2025, NYPD figures show.
