The Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union has reportedly revoked its endorsement of Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, amid renewed scrutiny of his past positions on policing and incarceration.
El-Sayed did advocate defunding the police in 2020 and supported efforts to reduce jail and prison populations. However, during his current Senate campaign, he has said he supports funding police recruitment and retention and does not advocate emptying prisons.
The endorsement reversal adds another development to a closely watched Michigan Senate race, as El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in the November 3 general election.
