Ilhan Omar is now fundraising off the Department of Homeland Security raid on her Washington, D.C. home โ sending emails that frame the judicially authorized search as a “dangerous and authoritarian attack” by President Trump on a political opponent, and asking supporters to pay for the fight.
The search itself was no midnight stunt. Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a warrant secured by the Justice Department through the courts on Monday morning, part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Sources say the probe centers on immigration paperwork allegedly filled out by Omar's late father when the family came to the United States from Somalia during her childhood. The supporting affidavit remains sealed and no charges have been announced.
Omar's own statement set the fundraising frame within hours.
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”
House Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar backed her, condemning the search as a rogue abuse of power and the weaponization of the federal government against Trump's adversaries. The White House kept its distance: asked about the search ahead of a campaign rally in Ohio, Trump said he understood investigators were “looking at her very carefully” โ and that the matter was really up to the Justice Department.
It is also not the first time Omar has raised money off a federal investigation. In a September fundraising email, weeks before the search, she wrote that she was “not at all worried about these investigations, because they are complete shams.” This time the investigation arrived at her front door โ and the ask went out anyway.
