A driver in a black pickup truck drove onto youth soccer fields at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing one child and one adult and sending several other people to hospitals, police said.
Sedgwick County emergency dispatchers began getting multiple 911 calls at about 3:25 p.m. local time reporting that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game at the complex near 29th Street North and Greenwich Road, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said.
"We have two fatalities confirmed here at the scene and multiple other casualties with individuals transported to area hospitals," Moses told reporters. Police have not said how many people were hurt or how badly. The names and ages of the two people killed have not been released.
Moses said the truck stayed at the scene and the driver is in police custody. Two juveniles were also inside the truck at the time. Police have not said whether they were hurt. Moses said there is no ongoing threat to the public and called the crash a "tragedy."
A witness told KWCH 12 News the truck came "plowing through the youth soccer fields," hitting several people before stopping 100 to 200 yards down the field. Moses said he did not know how fast the truck was going or how it got onto the field. Police have not said whether the crash was deliberate, and the investigation is ongoing.
The City of Wichita has canceled all events at the complex until further notice. Police said they would give another update Saturday evening.
