Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has warned that Republicans could struggle to regain control of Congress in 2028 after Democrats' sweeping Nov. 3 midterm wins, saying that looking at the Senate map and a large House margin, it is "very unlikely Republicans will recapture the Congress in 2028" and they "might not have a shot at Senate control until 2032."
In a post on X, DeSantis predicted Democrats could hold 55 Senate seats and more than 250 House seats, sharing a New York Times forecast. He also warned that a conservative successor to Justices Clarence Thomas or Samuel Alito might not be confirmable until 2032.
Context: Democrats won control of both chambers in the Nov. 3 midterms, ending Republican control of the House and Senate; the scale of the gains is what DeSantis says leaves the GOP without a clear path back in 2028.
Balance: DeSantis is the outgoing Florida governor; his warning is his own assessment of the map and margins, not a certified final seat count — some close contests were still unresolved when he posted.
