The US Supreme Court begins its new nine-month term on Monday, and once again the docket is dominated by cases involving President Donald Trump's far-reaching policies and expansive use of presidential power.
The court, with its 6-3 conservative majority, ended its last term in June with several major wins and a few big losses for the Trump administration. The new term promises more of the same.
Already on the docket: disputes over two key immigration policies — mandatory detention without a bond hearing, and the rapid expulsion of deportees to third countries. The administration has also filed appeals defending the ban on transgender people in the military, cuts to academic grants, efforts to install federal prosecutors, and the suspension of asylum at the US-Mexico border.
Legal analysts say the term will keep testing how far the justices will let the president expand his authority — the defining question of the Trump era at the court.
