Tennessee prisons chief Frank Strada is resigning following the failed execution of convicted murderer Christa Pike, Gov. Bill Lee announced.
Pike reportedly received two doses of the lethal-injection drugs, but the execution was unsuccessful. She was transported to a hospital afterward and, according to her attorneys, placed on a ventilator.
Gov. Lee has ordered an independent review of what went wrong and halted all executions in Tennessee for the remainder of the year. The incident is now raising renewed questions about the state's execution procedures and whether alternative methods should be considered.
