President Donald Trump is placing his campaign against Iran's nuclear program among the signature achievements of his presidency.
"They will not have a nuclear weapon," Trump said during remarks at Tuesday's America.gov launch event in Washington. "This Iran thing is going to be over very soon. They're failing, and they're in total collapse."
Trump said the historical significance of the campaign would only become clear with time: "I think in the years to come, books will be written that will tell the history of our country, and they will say this was one of the most important things we did."
The president also predicted relief at the pump, saying oil prices would fall back toward their pre-conflict levels as energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz recover. He described his decision to strike Iran as "this little foray into the Islamic Republic of Iran."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said ships and oil are transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with the waterway remaining open while negotiations over safe passage continue.
The message from the administration remains unchanged: Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
