President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he will officially ban the term "artificial intelligence" in all relevant government documents, replacing it with "super intelligence," in a Truth Social post that singled out The Wall Street Journal for continuing to use the old term.
Trump asked when the Journal would start using "SI (Super Intelligence)," describing it as the name virtually everyone else is using or soon will be, and called "artificial intelligence" a bad and inaccurate name. "In short order, we will be officially BANNING the term, 'AI/Artificial Intelligence,' in all relevant documents, and everything else, due to its inaccuracy," he wrote.
The announcement follows an executive order Trump signed on September 30, titled "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence," which directed federal executive departments and agencies to replace "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" with "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in official communications and operations, to the maximum extent permitted by law. Under that order, the revised terminology is to be used in government correspondence, public communications, official websites, reports and administrative policy documents. Previously issued regulations, existing government contracts, grants and historical archival records are not to be retroactively altered.
The executive order said technological advances had outgrown the original framework used to describe artificial intelligence, and that the existing terminology no longer accurately reflects the capabilities of advanced technology.
