President Donald Trump has signed an executive order launching America.gov, a centralized AI-powered portal designed to give Americans a single point of entry to federal government services.
Unveiled Tuesday at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, America.gov is meant to consolidate information and services currently scattered across nearly 30,000 federal websites. The order directs the Administrator of General Services, the Administrator of the National Design Studio and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to establish and operate America.gov, and to integrate Login.gov with it. Federal agencies are being told to bring their citizen-facing services onto the platform within 90 days.
Covered services include public-facing federal services serving more than 100,000 users in a 12-month period that can be accessed or applied for online. IRS tax-filing services and national-security-sensitive services from the Department of War and the Intelligence Community are excluded.
"The federal government no longer stands in your way, and it stands only at your service," Trump said at the launch. "What we are launching today is not just a website. This is about restoring America's founding promise and reinventing your government for the 21st century and beyond."
The site uses chatbot-style plain-language interaction powered by AI — the White House fact sheet refers to "Super Intelligence" — and currently answers questions drawn from official government sources. Later this year, Americans will be able to complete tasks like passport renewal and Medicare enrollment directly on America.gov without being bounced through a maze of agency sites.
The launch included new commitments: Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that passport applications will soon be fully available online, including photo uploads, and Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, demonstrated the site's Medicare side. The portal was built by the National Design Studio, led by Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia.
