President Donald Trump is warning Republicans that the 2026 midterms are a referendum on him personally: win them, or a Democratic House will come for his presidency. If Republicans lose control of the House, he says, Democrats will find a reason to impeach him — whether a real one exists or not.
“You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be — I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.”
Trump delivered the warning to House Republicans at their policy retreat at the Kennedy Center in Washington, and he has repeated the message on the campaign trail since. At his October 1 rally in Durant, Oklahoma, he put it to voters directly: “Pretend I’m running, please” — because, in his words, he is on the ballot in November whether his name appears there or not.
On one side, Trump argues that a Democratic majority would weaponize impeachment against him regardless of the facts, using it as a political tool rather than a serious constitutional process. He has history on his side of the argument: Democrats impeached him twice in his first term, and the Senate acquitted him both times.
On the other side, critics say the comment shows Trump is more focused on protecting himself from accountability than on governing, and that impeachment would only happen if lawmakers found real high crimes or misdemeanors.
Either way, the stakes he is setting are plain. All 435 House seats and a third of the Senate are on the ballot November 3, and the GOP's room for error in the House is thin. Trump's closing argument to his own party is that holding Congress is what stands between his agenda — and another impeachment fight.
