.ai is Anguilla's country code, handed out in the 1990s. It had nothing to do with artificial intelligence. After ChatGPT, companies wanted the ending anyway. You do not pay the island directly. You pay a registrar, the registrar pays the registry, and most of the fee goes to the Anguilla government. About $140 for two years. In 2025 that came to roughly $85 million, close to 40% of the government's revenue, from a place with about 16,000 people. They were not taking a cut of OpenAI. They were charging rent on the name. That is how the island reached.
On 29 September 2026 Trump ordered the executive branch to stop saying AI and start saying Super Intelligence, SI. That does not cancel the names already registered. Those keep renewing. What it did was move the new buyers. SI was already taken. .si is Slovenia, and Slovenia is where Melania Trump was born. Register.si logged about 44,000 new addresses in September, against fewer than 2,000 in August. A .si name has been about $10. Those fees go to Slovenia, not Anguilla.
People are already saying Trump just credited Slovenia with a revenue stream, the same accident that made Anguilla rich, except this time the country is his wife's. Nothing in the order says that was the point. It also does not say he knew .si was already a country code. That is the situation. Anguilla keeps the old book. Slovenia got the rush on the new label, and viewers are left to decide if he knew.
