UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband says the UK government "deeply mourns the British national and other victims" of the shooting in Kraków's Main Market Square. "All of my deepest condolences go to the families of the victims," Miliband said in a statement. "The UK stands resolutely in solidarity with the people of Poland." A British citizen is among the six people killed when a gunman opened fire in the square, where at least 15 others were injured before police shot and detained the attacker.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that three more bodies were found at the suspect's home — "It looks like they are members of his close family," he said — bringing the overall death toll to nine. Police Chief Marek Boroń confirmed the British citizen was among the six killed in the square. Tusk named the two wounded officers who stopped the gunman as Senior Constable Jakub Kulik and Senior Constable Artur Morański. One of the officers is in a very critical condition after being shot three times while arresting the attacker, and police have appealed for blood donations for Kulik, who is described as fighting for his life.
Part of the Main Market Square has reopened while cordons remain in place, and investigators are still working to establish the gunman's motive. An association representing Kraków's horse-drawn carriage drivers said many of its colleagues were injured in the square, with two fighting for their lives.
The Main Market Square is where Kraków works and gathers — carriage drivers, market traders, families and tourists in one of Europe's most famous public spaces. The two officers who ran toward the gunfire are the reason the toll was not higher, and both now lie seriously hurt; for the families of the nine dead, in Poland, Britain and beyond, the statements of condolence from London and Warsaw are the start of answers, not the end of them.
