The WNBA just cleared A'ja Wilson — and then she cleared out the Indiana Fever. The league announced no suspension and no fine for Wilson after her heated Game 2 confrontation with a courtside fan at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
With about four minutes left in the fourth quarter and the Fever up 90-79, Sophie Cunningham was on the floor after contact with Wilson. A fan behind the basket pointed at Wilson and said the foul was on her. Wilson stepped off the baseline, pulled her mouthpiece, and went at him yelling, "You don't point at me." Teammates pulled her back, and she got a technical — but was not ejected.
The rule says a player who deliberately enters the stands is automatically ejected. The league's call: she never entered the stands. Officials determined Wilson stayed in the "player escape lane" by the basket stanchion, so the technical stands and that's it. The fan was escorted out, then allowed back in after security found no violation of the fan code of conduct. Wilson said afterward she didn't care what he said — a man stepping toward her and pointing was "unacceptable."
Then came Game 3 in Las Vegas. Wilson poured in 36 points with 10 rebounds in a 94-83 Aces win, sending Las Vegas to the WNBA semifinals.
What to watch next: how the Aces carry this momentum into the semifinals — and whether the league's "escape lane" ruling draws any formal challenge.
