Dictionary.com on Monday, Oct. 26, named “maxxing” its 2026 Word of the Year. Short for “maximizing,” the slang term means pursuing an activity to the fullest or optimizing some part of life as much as possible. It can stand alone or attach to almost any word, as in looksmaxxing, gymmaxxing, proteinmaxxing, fibermaxxing and tokenmaxxing.
“Maxxing is the linguistic manifestation of a culture increasingly preoccupied with getting the most out of everything,” said Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for the Dictionary Media Group at IXL Learning, which runs Dictionary.com. “Whatever we’re doing, we want to push it further.”
The numbers behind the pick
Dictionary.com said digital media used the term nearly 19 times more often in August 2026 than its 2025 monthly average, and “looksmaxxing” appeared about 9 times as often. Lexicographers chose the word after analyzing search data, social media trends and news coverage. The format traces back to the gaming term “min-maxing” and to the older “maxing out” a credit card; archived internet data shows “looksmaxxing” as far back as 2015.
The shortlist
The other finalists were “affordability,” which Dictionary.com tied to rising costs of housing, groceries and childcare heading into the midterm elections; “data center,” reflecting the spread of AI facilities across the U.S.; “unc,” Gen Z slang for an older person who is out of touch; and “odyssey,” boosted by Christopher Nolan’s summer film adaptation of Homer’s epic.
