MOSCOW — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit in Moscow on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, that Iran's natural gas production capacity has reached 300 billion cubic metres despite years of international sanctions. In remarks framed as defiance of Western sanctions, he presented that capacity figure as evidence of resilience.
Pezeshkian called for expanded strategic and technical cooperation among GECF members, according to the account of his remarks, and said Iran is ready to play a more active role in global energy security. He also urged member states to work together on joint investments and gas trade, and on multilateral cooperation to support market stability.
According to the reports of his remarks, natural gas accounts for about 70% of Iran's energy mix, and Iran ranks as the world's third-largest gas producer after the United States and Russia. The GECF's 12 member countries hold around 70% of the world's proven gas reserves, according to the same reports.
Pezeshkian attended the Moscow summit and met President Vladimir Putin on its sidelines, according to the reports. The sanctions context described in the reports is that the sanctions restrict trade, investment and access to technology and markets, while Iran's very high domestic gas consumption also pressures supplies at peak demand.
