A Learjet 60 business jet with nine people on board crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, around 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The crash site is near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, by the Village of Palm Springs and the city of Greenacres. The FAA said the jet came down in a residential area near Cresthaven.
Where the jet was going
The FAA said the aircraft took off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, and the FAA said the NTSB will lead the investigation and give all updates.
On the ground
The Palm Beach Post reported that the plane hit a mobile home, and that fires and debris were scattered across the area. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue called it a “mass casualty incident.”
Authorities have not said how many people were killed or hurt, including whether anyone on the ground was among the victims. No names have been released.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is managing the incident. It closed all northbound and southbound lanes of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and asked drivers to avoid the area. Greenacres Fire Rescue sent four units to help, and Village of Palm Springs utility crews are on scene watching water and sewer service.
The video
Dash-cam video shared widely on X shows the jet diving steeply toward the ground, followed by a large fireball. Flight-tracking data shared online showed the jet in a steep dive before impact. Officials have not said what caused the crash.
The weather around West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon was overcast with rain and lightning nearby, with east winds of about 15 mph gusting near 25 mph, according to the Palm Beach Post, citing the National Weather Service.
