Nicki Minaj spent Election Day campaigning for President Trump’s candidates — she appeared at a New Hampshire polling place on Tuesday backing his picks. It did not save his party: voters took the House and the Senate from the Republicans. And that same Tuesday, the law firm that once defended her was asking a judge to hand it a $295,605.41 default judgment over legal bills it says she never paid.
The firm, Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, filed a renewed request for a default judgment against Minaj and her company, Harajuku Barbie Music, LLC, in Los Angeles. The total is $295,605.41: $229,541.75 in allegedly unpaid bills, plus $25,249.51 in late charges, $37,825 in attorney’s fees for pursuing the debt and $2,989.15 in costs. The bills come from the firm’s defence of the copyright lawsuit over her 2014 song “I Lied,” in which songwriter Julius Johnson claimed the track copied his song “onmysleeve.” No judgment has been granted, and a hearing is set for November 16.
The firm first sued in March, saying it had a 2024 legal-services agreement with her and did the work. After she and her company did not respond, the court entered defaults against both. An earlier hearing on the request, set for September, was postponed by the judge after the firm’s first attempts ran into proof-of-service problems; Tuesday’s renewed request is its next try. A representative for Minaj did not respond to a request for comment on the filing, and she has said nothing publicly about the fees case.
Minaj became one of Trump’s most visible celebrity backers this cycle, joining him on stage at his Port Huron rally in October and campaigning for his candidates through Election Day itself — support that made no difference to the result, as Democrats swept both chambers. The fees case carries a warning that runs the other way for everyone else: a default means the other side can win without ever having to prove its case at trial, which is how a disputed bill turns into a judgment a court can enforce. The judge decides on November 16 whether the firm gets one.
