President Trump turned on his own former lawyer on Saturday night. Asked at his Mar-a-Lago Halloween party about Alina Habba Mildon's $50 million contract, the president called the deal "totally obnoxious and outrageous" and "not acceptable — at all," and said he had told her directly that he did not want her to be paid, calling the whole episode "terrible."
The contract is with Concord Partners. The New York Times reported last week that the family of Venezuelan banker Julio Herrera Velutini — a man Trump pardoned on January 15, 2026 — guaranteed Habba Mildon more than $50 million over four years, and that she signed the deal while she was serving as acting U.S. attorney in New Jersey. Habba Mildon served as the president's personal lawyer before he put her in the prosecutor's office.
No response from Habba Mildon appears in the reporting so far. But the president's objection is now on the record in his own words, and it is not a technical one: he is saying a $50 million payday arranged around public office is wrong, whoever signs it.
For ordinary Americans, the point lands plainly: public office is not supposed to be a bridge to an eight-figure private payday. A president publicly telling his own former lawyer that her $50 million side deal is unacceptable — and that he told her so to her face — is the standard voters say they want applied to everyone in Washington, insiders included.
