A new report from The Independent says U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio is on "resignation watch" and may step down from the Trump administration to prepare a 2028 presidential campaign.
Sources in Washington and the British government claim Rubio is among several senior officials expected to leave after the Republican midterm losses, in which the party lost both the House and the Senate — and, according to the report, senior figures on both sides of the Atlantic expected the move even before the results were final. Allies argue Rubio needs distance from the administration to run, setting up a possible contest with Vice President J.D. Vance for the Republican nomination. Rubio has previously said he has no current plans to run for president and would step aside if Vance decides to enter the race.
The White House and the State Department have strongly denied the report. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle called it "baseless, false conspiracy theories." At the State Department, Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson called it "completely baseless fake news from made-up anonymous 'sources'" and a "completely fabricated hoax." The claim rests on anonymous sources, and no official has confirmed any resignation plan.
If it did happen, the blow would be doubled: Rubio holds two of the biggest jobs in the government at once — Secretary of State and National Security Advisor — so one resignation would empty both chairs at the same time, on top of an administration already facing a Congress it no longer controls.
For ordinary Americans, the stakes are practical: the Secretary of State runs the country's dealings with the world — trade, borders and wars — and a sudden change at the top, with a hostile Congress watching, would be felt far beyond Washington.
