President Donald Trump has turned on comedian Bill Maher in a 1,323-word Truth Social post published on Sunday, calling him a "COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER" and a "major POTHEAD" and ending with the instruction: "Bill: Don't call anymore."
The post, described by the operators of the Factbase database as Trump's longest social media post ever out of 97,457 catalogued since 2011, came two days after Maher used his Friday night Real Time monologue to defend his second White House dinner with the president while still making jokes at Trump's expense. At nearly twice the length of Trump's previous record-holder, a 723-word post from May, it marks the collapse of the on-again, off-again détente between the two men.
Trump's account of the second dinner, held on October 15 alongside sports commentator Stephen A. Smith and musician Kid Rock, directly contradicts Maher's. Maher said the gathering lasted four hours and listed subjects he said he challenged Trump on, including the Supreme Court, Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump's treatment of Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping and the 2020 election. Trump wrote that it lasted two hours at most. "Overall, I thought it was a good meeting. It didn't last four hours, it lasted two hours, maybe less, and everybody was happy. We have the timestamps. I learned nothing, and felt it was a waste of time," he wrote.
Trump also alleged that Maher arrived in poor shape. "He looked like hell this time. Bill was drunk and had alcohol in his hand as he walked through the White House," he wrote, adding that Maher had a "seriously bruised eye and nose area, as though somebody had just beaten him up — But it wasn't me!" He said he had wanted to tell Maher face to face that "he's a major POTHEAD," adding: "He's got to stop [the pot], it's very bad for his health."
The two men also disagree over who sought the second dinner. Trump wrote that Maher's associate Chuck LaBella called him ten times asking for Maher to come back, and that he agreed so he could deliver the pothead message. Maher said on his Club Random podcast before the visit that Trump had instigated it himself by text, writing "Let's have dinner again" and promising he would not say bad things about Maher as he had after the first dinner.
Trump recalled that after the first dinner, in March 2025, Maher gave a good first show and then reverted to his former self, which Trump said he understood because Maher "has to cater to his base." After the second dinner, he wrote, Maher's show "was far worse than the first. He went crazy! He's gutless, because he enjoyed every minute."
He closed by withdrawing the attention Maher had sought. "You're not transformative, you're a Loser! I never watched your show much, but I will never watch it again, because it is nothing more than FAKE NEWS that America, and the World, is unfortunately subjected to," Trump wrote. "Bill: Don't call anymore. It's useless."
On Friday's Real Time, Maher had defended returning to the White House. "I'm the bad guy because I go and say face-to-face to the man the things you write in articles that he'll never read," he said. "You know what? Fuck you. I like these dinners." He credited Trump with remaining composed throughout their disagreements, saying: "We should talk. I'm glad that we talked."
The Daily Beast has contacted the White House and representatives for Maher for comment.
