The Associated Press has called California's governor's race for Democrat Xavier Becerra, defeating Trump-backed Republican Steve Hilton to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. The AP made the call at 11:00 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday night, with Becerra holding 3,051,275 votes to Hilton's 1,719,246 in the count.
Becerra, a former U.S. health and human services secretary and a former California attorney general, becomes the first Latino elected governor of California. Claiming the win on Tuesday night, he told the state: "I'm honored to be your next Governor, and I'll fight for every family in this state, every single day."
Hilton, a former Fox News host backed by President Trump, was trying to put a Republican in the California governor's office for the first time in two decades. Becerra takes over a state of 39 million people where families face the highest housing and living costs in the country, and his promise to them is a daily fight on those costs — on rent, on health care and on the price of getting by.
