Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva used a livestream on Thursday to mock the man he beat in last month’s presidential runoff, calling Flávio Bolsonaro a jinx who, in Lula’s telling, even managed to make Donald Trump lose in the United States.
Speaking on the “Exército do Lula” — Lula’s Army — livestream alongside federal deputy André Janones, Lula said in Portuguese: “Foi correr agora, pé-frio, derrotou o Trump, chegou nos Estados Unidos e o Trump perdeu” — “He came running now, the jinx; he defeated Trump — he arrived in the United States and Trump lost.” Pé-frio, literally “cold foot,” is the Brazilian term for a person who brings bad luck on everyone around him.
Lula drew the contrast himself: after his own victory, he raised Brazil’s flag — while Flávio, he said, kissed the American flag. And he said the defeated candidate had fled to the United States looking for protection he would not find there, and must return to Brazil to face the legal cases waiting for him at home.
Flávio Bolsonaro lost the October 25 runoff to Lula by 51.79 percent to 48.21 percent, and arrived in Miami on October 28. He has remained in the United States since. Flávio posted on X on Thursday night, but did not answer the jinx line directly.
For Americans, the fight has now moved partly onto U.S. soil: a defeated presidential candidate is living in Florida while the president who beat him tells a live audience that the man ran from his own country’s courts — and names Trump himself as the jinx’s latest victim. Whether Flávio stays in America or goes back to face his cases is now a question sitting in the United States as much as in Brazil.
