CD Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that Jesús de Miguel had died at 8:00 a.m. that morning, after his condition deteriorated overnight following a collision during Monday's match against FC Andorra.
The incident happened in stoppage time of the Segunda División match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, with the score at 2-2. FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his area to clear a long ball and struck de Miguel in the chest with his knee. De Miguel collapsed and was treated on the pitch.
He suffered a cardiac arrest, reportedly in the ambulance, according to Marca, and was taken to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. He was initially described as stable despite the severity of his injuries, but his neurological condition later deteriorated. The match was abandoned and Owono was sent off.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. Canary Islands authorities describe the inquiry as a routine procedure because Spanish law requires a judicial inquiry into any death deemed non-natural. Owono has not been convicted and is not certain to face charges; reports say he is expected to avoid criminal sanctions. He was deeply affected by the incident and has deactivated his Instagram account.
De Miguel was born in Madrid on September 21, 1996. After a productive spell at Castellón, where he scored 16 goals and helped the club win promotion, he joined Tenerife in 2025 and scored 11 goals in 29 appearances.
Tributes have come from FC Andorra, the Spanish players' association (AFE) and other clubs.
Reporting on the death was carried by Sky Sports, Sportbible and other outlets on November 3, 2026.
