Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has reacted to the Democrats' victory in the United States midterm elections, saying the result will not stop President Donald Trump, but predicting that the rest of Trump's term will be dominated by impeachment efforts, vetoes and a kind of paralysis in Washington.
Babiš said the outcome was as expected, though he called the Democrats' victory huge, noting that even the Republican stronghold of Texas fell and that Democrats gained ground in places where they had not won for decades.
In his view, until the end of President Trump's term, it will be all about impeachment and vetoes, and a certain kind of paralysis — while Trump himself, Babiš added, will almost certainly continue to do exactly as he pleases.
Babiš closed with a hope that Trump will finally return to his promise to end the war in Ukraine and to resolve the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.
The reaction came as world leaders responded to the Democrats winning control of Congress in the November 3 midterms. The new Congress is due to convene on January 3, 2027, leaving Trump facing Democratic majorities in both chambers for the final two years of his presidency, while he retains the presidency and the veto.
The remarks were reported by Reuters on November 4 as part of its roundup of international reactions to the midterm result.
