Federal agents searched a Beverly Hills mansion on Tuesday morning in connection with the ongoing investigation into former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, according to Fox News, citing people familiar with the probe. Swalwell was not arrested or detained.
The mansion is reported to be owned by a donor to Swalwell. Fox News correspondent Matt Finn identified the property as a home believed to belong to Stephen Cloobeck, a businessman who previously ran for California governor and later supported Swalwell. The full scope of what agents sought in the search has not been publicly detailed.
The search follows an August operation in which agents seized Swalwell's electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport on August 15 and searched his Washington, D.C., home the next day, according to court records and the Associated Press. The devices taken included an iPhone and a MacBook Pro, and the warrants cited the federal civil-rights statute 18 U.S.C. § 242.
Swalwell resigned from Congress in April 2026 after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, including rape. A former staffer told the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN that he sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions, including when she was too intoxicated to consent, while other women described unsolicited explicit messages and photos. He withdrew his bid for California governor as the allegations became public, and faced the threat of expulsion from the House.
On Monday, the White House declassified FBI records concerning Swalwell's past relationship with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. According to the records, Swalwell told FBI agents he had "physical relations" with Fang on several occasions, and was interviewed about the relationship in May 2015 and March 2016.
Swalwell has denied the misconduct allegations, calling the serious claims "flat out false," while acknowledging "mistakes in judgment" and apologizing to his family, staff and constituents. He has said he will fight the allegations.
Separate investigations continue: the Manhattan District Attorney's office confirmed in April that it was investigating Swalwell, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has investigated an allegation by a Beverly Hills woman relating to a 2018 encounter; the county district attorney's sex-crimes unit received the matter on September 21 and has not announced a charging decision. No charges have been announced in the federal probe.
