German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul spoke in Berlin on Wednesday, Nov. 4, on the Nov. 3 US midterm results, urging compromise and common ground between the incoming Democratic Congress and President Trump, and warning political divisions should not damage US-German relations.
Wadephul said he was optimistic US support for Ukraine would continue and there would now be more discussion in Congress, including between both parties, about what can be done together to support Ukraine.
Trump himself told the New York Times he was "absolutely willing to accept" the results and would work with Democrats — "We'll probably work something out" — while warning he would use his veto. He also congratulated Democrats on Fox News. Those words are Trump's, not Wadephul's.
Berlin's wider reaction included Defence Minister Boris Pistorius congratulating Democrats on an "historic victory" and stressing Berlin will reach out to both Democrats and Republicans.
Germany is a key NATO ally; the shift in Congress affects transatlantic cooperation on Ukraine, trade and security, and Berlin is signalling it will work with both sides in Washington.
