Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said on Wednesday that four oil tankers were destroyed after hitting naval mines south of the Strait of Hormuz, that two more vessels were stopped, and that its forces shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone at about 4:30 in the morning local time — which it called its 56th drone kill. The statement was carried by Iranian state media and reported around the world as an Iranian claim.
What the claim does not have behind it is confirmation. The Guard named no vessel, no flag, no owner and no position. No maritime authority — not the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre, not the U.S. Navy, not any flag state, shipowner, insurer or vessel tracker — has confirmed any tanker destroyed, mined or seized, and BBC Verify, which investigated the claim, found no evidence that four tankers were destroyed. Even the Iranian-carried versions differ among themselves: some say all four tankers were still ablaze, others that two were burning and two more were intercepted or turned back.
The one attack in the strait that authorities have confirmed this week is a different incident. On Tuesday evening a tanker — identified in maritime reporting as the Barbados-flagged VLCC Grit — was struck by two projectiles in its engine room about 14 nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman, with no casualties, according to UKMTO. Those were projectiles, not mines.
Washington has not commented on Wednesday’s statement itself. U.S. Central Command’s standing position, posted on October 28, calls Iranian claims that commercial vessels are hitting sea mines in the strait “FALSE” and says the internationally recognised primary transit routes through the strait have been cleared of Iranian mines — a position its commander, Adm. Brad Cooper, restated on October 30.
The Strait of Hormuz carries about a fifth of the world’s oil, which is why a real mine strike there would reach American drivers fast, in the price of fuel. On Wednesday the market moved the other way: Brent crude fell below $100 a barrel as traders discounted the unverified claim and priced in a possible U.S.–Iran settlement. For now, the claim stands as Tehran’s word alone — stated here exactly as that, with no confirmation behind it.
